Questions, answered plainly
Where exactly is my data?
Desktop: one SQLite file in your user profile
(com.ohmsense.yorkipro). Web: the same SQLite format inside your
browser's origin-private file system — on your disk, readable only by this site,
never transmitted. Use Settings → “Protect data from eviction” and export backups
regularly; clearing browsing data deletes browser storage.
Can I move data between the desktop and web editions?
Yes — backups are ordinary .sqlite files with an identical schema.
Export from one edition and restore in the other; projects, custody logs,
watchlists and settings all carry over, and custody hash-chains verify on both
sides.
Which browsers work?
Connecting hardware needs the Web Serial API: Chrome or Edge on Windows, macOS, or
Linux. Firefox and Safari can run the demo but cannot talk to a detector. On
Brave, enable Web Serial in brave://settings. Mobile browsers are
demo-only.
What needs a license?
The desktop app runs unlicensed. In the web edition the demo devices are free for
everyone, and connecting a real detector requires a license — activate at
ohmsense.com.au/activate
with your device serial, then paste the license in Settings. Verification happens
entirely in your browser.
Does the web app work offline?
After your first visit it installs as a PWA and opens offline — device syncs, maps,
geocoding and case files all run locally. Updates apply only when you reload, never
mid-session.
Why keep a desktop edition at all?
Because “we don't send your data anywhere” is a promise, while “this binary contains
no networking code” is a property. The web edition holds the first; the desktop
edition holds the second. For court-bound or air-gapped work, use desktop.
